Joseph Caruso Jr., 69, of Latrobe, went to meet his maker on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, after a courageous 14-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was born Dec. 23, 1933, in Latrobe, a son of the late Joseph Sr. and Maria Moranelli Caruso; and brother of the late Innocenzo "Jimmy" Caruso, who was killed in World War II. Joe was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Latrobe, American Legion Post #515 and its former Drum and Bugle Corps, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, a lifetime member of Latrobe V.F.D., an original member of the Latrobe mini-flower gardens project and the Latrobe Historical Society. He was a graduate of Latrobe High School, Class of 1952. He served as an M.P. in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, and was a mail carrier in Latrobe for 35 years, retiring in 1989. The kids on his mail route gave him the nickname "Mailman Joe." He is survived by his wife of 45 years, "Dolly" Alice Weaver Caruso; three children, Kevin Caruso and his wife, Maureen, Kurt Caruso and his wife, Kara, all of Latrobe, and Kelly Elliott and her husband, Bill, of Cranberry Township; 12 grandchildren, Rachel and her fiance, Shawn Marinchek, Jayson, Renee, Cas, Tyler and Alex Caruso, Maureen and Zyanya Dudas Caruso, Nicole and Joseph Caruso and Chas and Laura Elliott; three great-grandchildren, Nathaniel, Natalia and Darius; a brother, Angelo Caruso and his wife, Emma, of Latrobe; a sister, Gina Nicklas and her husband, Dr. Richard Nicklas, of Rockville, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Latrobe. Interment will be in Unity Cemetery, Unity Township. Latrobe V.F.D. will conduct a memorial service Tuesday at 7 p.m., the Eagles will hold a service at 8 p.m., and a military service will be conducted Wednesday at 9:15 a.m., all in the funeral home.
