William F. Wellek, 81, of Latrobe passed away Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012, in Select Specialty Hospital - Laurel Highlands, Latrobe. Born Feb. 4, 1930, in Loyalhanna, he was a son of the late William U. and Cora (Hess) Wellek. Retired from Teledyne Vasco, William attended Holy Family Roman Catholic Church. He was a life member of the Frontier Club and a member of Thomas B. Anderson American Legion Post 515. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine D. Priestas Wellek, in 2009; a stepdaughter, Marianne Hardesty Koski, and three brothers, Hugo, Donald and Joseph Wellek. He is survived by two children, William R. Wellek of Latrobe and Deborah Baker and her husband, Carson, of Rural Valley; a grandson, Michael Challinor and his wife, Rachel, of Latrobe; a sister, Roma Hamerski of Derry, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial gathering of friends and family will be held at the Frederick Funeral Home, Inc. 1543 Ligonier Street, Latrobe, PA 15650 on Thursday, January 12, 2012 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. The combined funeral detail of local American Legion and VFW veterans will provide military honors at 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
