William Davis French, 97, of Greensburg (formerly of Latrobe), passed away Monday, June 8, 2026, at Redstone Highlands, Greensburg.
He was born Mar. 17, 1929, in Pittsburgh, PA, to the late Frank A. French Sr. and Ellen C. (Gittens) French.
William’s family moved to Latrobe in 1938; he was a graduate of Latrobe High School Class of 1947. William was a machinist and retired partner at F. A. French and Sons. He was a member of Latrobe Community Ministries; Loyalhanna Lodge No. 275 F. & A.M., recently receiving his 70 year membership pin; Royal Arch Masons Thomas B. Anderson Chapter 309; Olivet Council No. 13; Kedron Commandery No. 18; and Westmoreland Forest No. 77. William received the Gold award for outstanding service in York Rite Masonry by the York Rite Sovereign College of North America. William played the tuba for over 80 years and encouraged music education for his daughters and grandchildren. He played tuba in the Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra for its first seven years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Alice Kammerer French; two brothers, Frank A. French Jr. and George E. French; three sisters, Elizabeth Bracken, Ethel Johnston, and Florence French; a son-in-law, Robert D. Piper, and a step-grandson, Robert D. Piper Jr.
William is survived by four daughters, Ellen Piper, Elizabeth Moore (Paul), Edith Nevins (Charles), and Amy Massimini (Joseph); seven grandchildren, Grey Moore (Mairi), Janice Barry (Michael), Gerianna Massimini, Jessica Nevins, Carissa Surber (Matthew), William Massimini, Emily Rooney (Michael); four step-grandchildren, J. Charles Piper (Laurie), Alison Piper, Timothy Piper and David Piper (Jose Martinez); five great grandchildren, Nathaniel Barry, Noah Barry, Deacon Surber, Jack Rooney and Mila Rooney; six step-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2026, at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe, PA 15650. A funeral service will be held Monday, June 15, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at Latrobe Community Ministries, 440 Main St, Latrobe, PA 15650. EVERYONE IS ASKED TO GO DIRECTLY TO THE CHURCH. Burial will follow at St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg with a luncheon afterward at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in his name can be made to Shriners Children’s, P.O. Box 8923, Topeka, KS 66608-8923.
