Lawrence G. "Snuffy" Smith, 83, of Latrobe, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2007, at home. Born Oct. 14, 1923, in Cheswick, he was a son of the late John L. and Marie Pearl Davis Smith. He was a retired steelworker for Teledyne Vasco. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of American Legion Post 515, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3414, AMVETS Post 13, USS Bataan Association, 40/8 Voiture 46, and Westmoreland Umpire Association. He served as Pennsylvania state commander of the American Legion from 1984-1985. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Thomas J. Smith and James V. "Pud" Smith. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rose Marie (Hines) Smith; four children, John T. Smith and his wife, Linda L., of Latrobe, Gerald V. Smith and his wife, Jennifer, of Waldorf, Md., Patricia Hamill and her husband, John, of Derry, and Michael P. Smith and his wife, Linda, of Ocean Isle Beach, N.C.; three grandchildren, Neil M. Smith, Jason and Jeremy Beegle; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Kenny, of Latrobe, and Elizabeth Peffer and her husband, Kenneth, of Cleveland, Ohio; as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Latrobe. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery, Derry. The American Legion Post 515 Past Commanders will pay their respects at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. The combined funeral detail of American Legion Post 515 and VFW Post 3414 will provide military honors at 9 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
