George A. Hvizdos

George A. Hvizdos, 93, of Latrobe, died peacefully Saturday, June 11, 2011, at home. Born Oct. 31, 1917, in Whitney, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Barlock) Hvizdos. He was a member of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church for 54 years. He was a 1936 graduate of Latrobe High School and a graduate of Point Park University. Prior to retirement, he was a driver and salesman for Sani-Dairy. His father, John Hvizdos, was the owner and proprietor of the Whitney Cash Market, where George worked for many years. A World War II Army veteran, he served in the European Theater of Operations for 3 1/2 years. He served in London, and survived many attacks by the German "Buzz Bombs." Later, he was in charge of a PX in Paris, France. When he returned from the Army, he was the owner and operator of Midway Dairy Bar in Pleasant Unity. He was a member of American Legion Post 515 for more than 50 years, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Jednota, and the Latrobe Historical Society. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Hvizdos and Mike Hvizdos; a son-in-law, Richard Svrcek; and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Y. (Tiger) Hvizdos. He is survived by his loving wife of 68 1/2 years, Helen (Semancheck) Hvizdos; two children, Bonnie Lee Hvizdos Svrcek, of Fairfield, Conn., and Jerry Hvizdos, of Durham, N.C.; five sisters, Anna Hvizdos, Mary Sagan, Cecelia Washnock, Aurelia Hvizdos and Lucille Marsh; a brother, Leonard Hvizdos; and a granddog, Thor. Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the FREDERICK FUNERAL HOME INC., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Family Roman Catholic Church. Burial will be in Unity Cemetery, Latrobe. The combined funeral detail of local American Legion and VFW members will provide military honors at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.
