Edward A. Springel, 95 and 1/2, of Latrobe died Monday, June 27, 2011, in Oak Hill Nursing & Rehabilitation, Greensburg. Born Dec. 25, 1915, in Export, he was a son of the late Bronislaw and Emilia (Rudzinski) Szprengiel. He was retired as a steel worker for Allegheny Ludlum. He belonged to Holy Family Roman Catholic Church and United Steelworkers. He had served in the Polish Army in World War II, was captured December 1941 and was held prisoner by the Germans until the spring of 1945. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Ida (Klepczynski) Springel in 2009; a brother, Zygmunt Szprengiel, and a sister, Zofia Szejniuk. Surviving are his son, Edward R. Springel, DMD, and his wife, Donna, of Latrobe; four grandchildren, Edward H. Springel, MD, and his wife, Tamar Springel, MD, of Cherry Hill, N.J., Richard G. Springel and his wife, Jaime, of Greensburg, Katie Franks of Latrobe, and Mary Springel of Mount Pleasant, and six great-grandchildren, Donald, John, Sofia, Leah, Laynie and Jonathan. Family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Frederick Funeral Home Inc., 1543 Ligonier St., Latrobe. Funeral liturgy will be held 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the Very Rev. Daniel C. Mahoney, VF, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Latrobe.
